County sells land near airport

Clark County sold off some of the land it manages near the airport Tuesday.

The county collected a little under $2 million for seven parcels of land scattered around the south part of the urban area. The largest, a collection of five parcels totaling about 2 1/2 acres at Oquendo Road and Topaz Street, sold for $685,000.

None of the seven properties, which were sold by live auction, can be developed as homes under the existing county zoning or master plans for the area. Three of the sales can be developed for commercial or industrial purposes.

The other four parcels are adjacent to existing homes and, while homes cannot be built on them under the deed restrictions, they can have "accessory uses" to the homes, Clark County Aviation Director Randy Walker said.

He cited a horse stable as a potential use that would be allowed.

All of the land was owned by the federal government but turned over to the county in an effort to avoid unwanted residential development in the high-noise areas near the airport.

Under the terms of the auction, 80 percent of the revenue goes to the federal government. The county keeps $100,000 as a management fee, and the rest, about $37,000, goes to local schools.

Man sought in sexual assault

Metro Police have issued an arrest warrant for a 21-year-old man they say lured a 13-year-old girl into an apartment where he allegedly beat and sexually assaulted her last week.

The suspect, Jack Johnson, has been living in Las Vegas for the past several months and also uses the alias Sean Quentin Johnson, police said.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 12. Police alleged Johnson persuaded the victim to enter his apartment in the area of 3250 S. Decatur Blvd., where he punched her then sexually assaulted her.

Detectives with Metro's sexual assault unit have issued a warrant for Johnson's arrest, accusing him of sexual assault of a victim under 14, first-degree kidnapping and battery with intent to commit sexual assault.

Detectives are seeking the public's help in locating Johnson. He still may be in the Las Vegas area, they said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Detective Dolphis Boucher at 229-3421 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Man on median struck by SUV

A man soliciting for change was in critical condition after being struck by a sport utility vehicle on Decatur Boulevard at Russell Road about 8 a.m. Tuesday, Metro Police said.

Witnesses told police the man was soliciting for change on the raised center median of Decatur Boulevard where a "no pedestrians" sign was posted, then tried to cross Decatur against a red light, police said.

A 2003 BMW SUV driven by Christine Semeraro, 30, of Las Vegas swerved to avoid the man, but struck him. The man was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries.

Police said the man's name and age were unknown.
