More record heat across Nevada

Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003 | 8:13 a.m.

Temperature records fell for a second straight day across Nevada as summer showed no signs of surrendering to fall.

"It's possible we might break a record for the warmest October," National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Fuis said in Las Vegas.

The high at McCarran International Airport reached 94 on Tuesday, 3 degrees above a mark that has endured for 63 years.

Fuis said the average so far this month is 77.5 degrees. The record average for October is 74.9 degrees, set in 1988.

As usual, Tuesday's hottest reading were in the south. Along with the 94 at the airport, it was 95 in North Las Vegas, 5 degrees above the 1959 reading. Laughlin just missed the century mark at 99. Its record was 96 in 1988.

Reno climbed to 84, 2 degrees above the 1988 reading at the airport.

Winnemucca's 85 beat the record that has stood since 1915 by 2 degrees. Ely's 81 was 5 degrees above its 1988 reading and Elko warmed to 83, beating its 1921 mark by a degree.

Wells, which had its warmest October reading on record Monday with 88, stopped at 83 on Tuesday, 8 degrees above the 1952 mark.

Austin's 85 topped its 1927 high by 5, Battle Mountain reached 88 to add 7 degrees to its 1999 record and Tonopah's 83 was 2 degrees above its 1988 mark.

After another day of flirting with records, temperatures were expected to begin edging back toward more seasonal normals, the weather service in Reno said.
