Domestic violence vigil set Wednesday

The Interfaith Taskforce Against Domestic Violence is holding a candlelight vigil beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Palm Mortuary, 7600 Easter Ave.

The vigil is to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to remember by name the many who died in Clark County last year and celebrate those who survived.

Communities nationwide have come together to celebrate the individuals and families who have ended the cycle of violence in their lives and to mourn those who have died needlessly as a result of domestic violence.

Psychiatric hospital prompts rally

The Charleston Neighborhood Preservation Corp. is holding a rally at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to organize a response to a psychiatric hospital proposedfor the corner of Oakey and Jones boulevards.

Organizers ask those coming to bring a lawn chair, a flashlight, a neighbor and a sign expressing their views. The group will meet at the corner of Oakey and Jones.

Salvation Army food drive set

A food drive to benefit the Las Vegas chapter of the Salvation Army Food Bank will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith's Food and Drug, 2211 N. Rampart Blvd.

As part of the food drive, the community is asked to donate nonperishable foods and personal hygiene items to replenish the supplies of the food bank. Call 242-4495.

Special City Council meeting scheduled

Las Vegas will have a special City Council meeting to consider three special event licenses and to set dates for appeals and public hearings from the city Planning Commission, the Centennial Hills architectural review committee, and dangerous building and nuisance abatements.

The meeting is set for 4 p.m. Thursday in the city manager's conference room on the eighth floor of City Hall, 400 Stewart Ave.
