Samuel Barnes Jr.

Samuel Barnes Jr., 59, of North Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1944, in Bogalusa, La. A resident for 35 years, he was a retired hotel bartender.

He is survived by two daughters, Kena Gaynor and Karen Moore, both of North Las Vegas; two sons, Jeffery Barnes and Ray Barnes, and one brother, Richard Barnes, all of Las Vegas; three sisters, Elouise Brown of Las Vegas and Barbara May and Delores McCant of Angie, La.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation is scheduled noon-7 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Palm Chapel, Main. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Joan Marilyn Brooks

Joan Marilyn Brooks, 72, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospice. She was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Rock Island, Ill. A resident for 13 years, she was a retired executive secretary for Holiday Rambler Corp., and a volunteer.

She is survived by her husband, Richard D.; two sons, Adm. Jeffrey Brooks of Chesapeake, Va., and Terrance Brooks of Rock Island, Ill.; one daughter, Lori Brooks Rudack of Las Vegas; one sister, Elayne Bowes of Milan, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., is handling arrangements.

Harlond M. Cook

Harlond M. Cook, 85, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. He was born July 22, 1918, in Denver. A resident for seven years, he was a road engineer for the state of Colorado, a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Operating Engineers Union.

He is survived by one son, Larry Cook; one daughter, Harlene Harm; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

No local services are scheduled. Burial will be in Denver. Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

Maria Curiel-Hernandez

Maria Curiel-Hernandez, 49, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. She was born Aug. 15, 1954, in Cuerna Vaca Morelos, Mexico. A resident for 13 years, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Rosina Nieves Ramires, and two sons, Juan Carlos Curiel and Antonio Julio Nieves, all of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Graveside services will follow in Palm Memorial Park.

Richard C. Flanagan

Richard C. Flanagan, 77, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local care center. He was born Feb. 27, 1926, in St. Paul, Minn. A resident for 41 years, he was a retired mechanic, a World War II Navy veteran and a retired member of Operating Engineers Local 12.

He is survived by five daughters, Carol Rodman, Debbie Van Natta, Cindy Flanagan and Terry Pope, all of Las Vegas, and Susan Flanagan of Grants Pass, Ore.; one son, Richard Flanagan II of Las Vegas; three brothers, Raymond Flanagan, Robert Flanagan and James Flanagan, all of Minnesota; six sisters, Marion Toland, Betty Holman, Kathleen Hubbard, Corine Thompson and Patricia Proulx, all of Minnesota and Joan Stinar of Las Vegas; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is private. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Palm Memorial Park, Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., is handling arrangements.

Kenneth Carl Johannessen

Kenneth Carl Johannessen, 62, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. He was born Nov. 12, 1940, in Aurora, Ill. A resident for three years, he was a commercial artist and a Vietnam War Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; one son, Todd Stewart Johannessen of Falls Church, Va.; and one brother, Gene Johannessen of Oswego, Ill.

A memorial service will be 6 p.m. Monday at Las Vegas Country Club. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave., is handling arrangements.

Charlene Joy Kaydas

Charlene Joy Kaydas, 64, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. She was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Chicago. A resident for 51 years, she was a cocktail server.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; three sons, Gary, Rich and Keith; two brothers, Arthur Kostka and Gary Kostka; one sister, Candice Nichols; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Harry H. Knocke

Harry H. Knocke, 49, of Henderson died Monday in Henderson. He was born Jan. 14, 1954, in Germany. A resident for 11 years, he was a supervisor at an offset printing firm.

He is survived by his wife, Della M.; one daughter, Molly Knocke of Henderson; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Moses of Martinez, Calif., and Della Walton of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; his mother, Raili Knocke of Henderson; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Burial will be in Palm Memorial Park, Henderson.

August James Marques

August James Marques, 83, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local health care center. He was born Sept. 18, 1920, in New York City. A resident for 42 years, he was a retired Clark County School District teacher and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Campbell of Las Vegas; and two sisters, Eileen Ferriera of New York, and Alice McVeigh of North Carolina.

Visitation will continue until 7 p.m. today in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.

Philip L. Orndoff

Philip L. Orndoff, 77, of Henderson died Tuesday in Henderson. He was born May 20, 1926, in Humboldt, Ill. A resident for 37 years, he was a retired accountant for an automobile manufacturer, a World War II Navy veteran, a 50-year member of the Masons, a member of the Black Mountain Country Club and Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E.; one daughter, Phylis Dalbec of Mesa, Ariz.; three sons, James L. Orndoff, Lewis A. Orndoff and Robert D. Orndoff, all of Las Vegas; two sisters, Rosalee Flaherty of Phoenix and Grace Strong of Charleston, Ill.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 5-7 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Services will be 4 p.m. Saturday in Palm Chapel, Henderson.

Arthur 'Dick' Stevens III

Arthur "Dick" Stevens III, 61, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. He was born Dec. 31, 1941, in Chicago. A resident for 19 years, he was an entrepreneur and a Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Raiza; two daughters, Danielle Stevens and Kimberly Stevens, and his ex-wife, Mary Stevens, all of Las Vegas; his mother, Helen Stevens of Lake Geneva, Wis.; and two sisters, Diane Mennen of Lake Geneva and Debrah Stafford of Davenport, Iowa.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd.

Violet Lilian Townsend

Violet Lilian Townsend, 81, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. She was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Acle, Great Britain. A resident for 10 years, she worked in the archives of the British Consulate and was a World War II veteran of the British Women's Royal Air Force.

She is survived by one daughter, Angela Griener of Switzerland; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Elaine S. War

Elaine S. War, 78, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. She was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Blackwell, Okla. A resident for 52 years, she was retired from the health care industry.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas L.; one daughter, Suzanne Welling of Las Vegas; two sons, Robert M. Welling of Las Vegas and Michael P. Anthony of Phoenix; two stepsons, Thomas F. War of Las Vegas and William T. War of Denver; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

John H. Whitehurst

John H. Whitehurst, 63, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospice. He was born Feb. 28, 1940, in Virginia Beach, Va. A resident for nine years, he was a retired master carpenter.

He is survived by two daughters, Bridget Whitehurst and Alisha Regeski, both of Las Vegas; and two grandchildren.

Visitation was scheduled until 2 p.m. today in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.
