Christmas tree permits available

Christmas tree permits are on sale at the Bureau of Land Management Caliente Field Station, 1400 S. Front St., Caliente.

Permits costs $3 apiece with a limit of five permits per purchaser. Permits may be purchased at the BLM Caliente station or through the mail.

Mail-in applications will be accepted on a "first-come first-serve" basis through Nov. 21. All mail-in applications must include payment in the form of a check or money order. Mail-in applications should be addressed to the BLM Caliente Field Station, P.O. Box 237, Caliente, NV 89008. Applicants should allow two weeks for processing.

Christmas trees may be harvested on all BLM-administered public lands, except those designated as Wilderness Study Areas. Call (775) 726-8100.

Author Cussler to attend reception

Best-selling author Clive Cussler will be at the Meet the Author reception at 7 p.m. Friday at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson.

Cussler also will have an open book signing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the library.

Cussler has writen 14 novels that follow the adventures of fictional hero Dirk Pitt. His nonfiction works, "The Sea Hunters" and "The Sea Hunters II," chronicle his shipwreck discoveries.

Admission for the reception is $50, and includes a complimentary book signed by the author. Books will be available for sale at the signing.

The event will benefit the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Call 492-7252.

Walk to D'Feet ALS is scheduled

In a nation-wide campaign to help Strike Out Lou Gehrig's Disease, Southern Nevada's Walk to D'Feet ALS will take place Saturday at Police Memorial Park in Las Vegas.

Team check-in will be 10 a.m. Saturday at 2101 S. Jones Blvd., Suite 120.

Opening ceremonies will be 11 a.m., which include formal dedication of the park by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and City Councilman Larry Brown.

The ALS Association Nevada Chapter is the only voluntary not-for-profit organization in Nevada that provides direct, hands-on assistance to Nevada's ALS patients and their family members. Call 248-4507.

Seminar planned for home buyers

A Home of my Own, a free home buyer seminar, will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Consumer Credit Counseling Service, 3650 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 32.

Subjects that will be discussed are: Benefits of Home Ownership; Building and Improving Your Credit History; Budgeting for Accumulation of Funds; Obtaining a Mortgage; the Shopping Process; Negotiation and Closing; Nevada Law: Real Estate Property Disclosure.
