Motorola announces results

Motorola Inc. today announced better-than-expected profits and sales for the third quarter, rushing results out a day and a half early to counteract a downgrade by Moody's. The cell-phone maker earned $116 million in the three months ended Sept. 27, up 4.5 percent from a year earlier. The profit was 5 cents on a per-share basis.
