Killer receives life in prison
A man found guilty of stabbing his girlfriend to death in February 2000 was sentenced to life in prison Thursday with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
Desmond Damon Fleming was found guilty of murdering Priscilla Garvin at their home near Vegas Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Fleming was found guilty of the murder charge in January 2001 and chose to have a judge sentence him instead of the jury that found him guilty.
During the trial Fleming claimed that Garvin attacked him and that the stabbing was the result of a "rash and impulsive act."
Fleming also told jurors that the two had started arguing because he thought Garvin had struck their 1-year-old child in the face.
Fleming was also convicted of one count of perjury, and District Judge Jackie Glass sentenced him to 19 to 48 months in prison to run concurrently with the life sentence she gave him for the murder.
Homeless man stabbed to death
Metro Police said a homeless man stabbed another homeless man to death about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of McDonald's in the 2900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South.
Witnesses told police the two men had been arguing before the stabbing. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at University Medical Center.
Police are looking for a Hispanic man between 25 and 35 years old, about 5-feet-9 and 180 pounds. He was wearing a beige and black plaid shirt and was last seen running west from the restaurant.
The name of the victim has not been released.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the homicide section at 229-3521.
Indictment handed down in robberies
A man arrested last week in connection with a series of bank robberies was indicted Wednesday on six counts of robbery resulting in almost $20,000 being stolen.
Jason Alan Steele is named in the federal indictment that alleges he forced tellers to give him $19,505 during six robberies beginning on Sept. 12 and ending on Sept. 24.
In addition, Steele has an outstanding warrant for violation of a supervised release stemming from a 1999 bank robbery conviction.
Arrest made in molestation
A man charged with child molestation was arrested Wednesday by the Metro Police Fugitive Detail at a northwest Las Vegas apartment complex.
Juan England is accused by Washington state authorities of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old Tacoma girl.
England, a New York City native, originally cooperated with authorities, police said. However, after failing a lie detector examination, he fled Washington state.
England is in the Clark County Detention Center waiting an extradition hearing.
