Henderson school wins fitness honor
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 | 8:54 a.m.
Estes McDoniel Elementary School in Henderson was named a state champion last week by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Every year the award is presented to the three schools in each state that rank highest in the number of students who score at or above the 85th percentile on the President's physical fitness challenge.
The President's Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program is available to schools across the nation and offers presidential recognition and awards for fitness to all who participate. Schools named as state champion receive an award certificate as well as statewide and national recognition for their achievement.
The four components of the President's Challenge include a one-mile run/walk for heart and lung endurance; a "sit and reach" stretch for muscular flexibility; pull-ups for upper body strength and endurance; and shuttle run for agility.
"The students at McDoniel Elementary School deserve a round of applause for their hard work to keep physically fit," Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., said.
