PORTLAND, Maine -- The Maine People's Alliance, citing the prospect of thousands of new jobs, is lining up in support of a $650 million casino that the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indians want to build in Sanford.
The 16,000-member citizens' action group was expected to announce its support for the project today.
Backers of the proposed casino say it would create more than 4,000 jobs with an average annual salary of $31,400, and $6,000 worth of benefits.
The prospect of jobs with benefits, along with the rights of the tribes to govern themselves, prompted the Maine People's Alliance to endorse Question 3 on the Nov. 4 ballot, said co-director Tammy Greaton.
