Letter: Don’t forget Beers’ comments
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 | 8:35 a.m.
Assemblyman Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, has announced he will run against Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, in the next election.
Let's take a refresher course in some of the stupid things Beers has said in the past year. First is the remark he made about an AIDS awareness program that serves the black community. During an interview with a Sun reporter, he labeled Fighting AIDS in our Community Today (FACT) as a program "dedicated to putting condoms on gay men in the black community."
Then there is the comment from Beers made via e-mail to a constituent in which he described casino workers as "prone to dropping out of school ... reproducing illegitimate children ... abusing drugs and alcohol ... and not valuing education." And let's not forget that Beers insulted an Episcopalian bishop, calling her "a woman with no taxpaying parishioners."
Bob Beers as a senator? I think not. Sen. Rawson is thoughtful, intelligent, well thought of and a tough negotiator. We don't need a loose cannon who has to turn around and apologize for himself every day.
