Preparedness workshop planned

Nevada Power, the Clark County Fire Department and Metro Police will host a neighborhood emergency preparedness workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Paradise Recreation and Community Services Center, 4775 McLead Drive.

The seminar will cover several emergency preparedness areas. Call 455-8531.

New fire station to open Wednesday

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Councilwoman Janet Moncrief, City Manager Doug Selby and Fire Chief David Washington will join area residents to break ground for the new Fire Station 5 at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The new fire station is set to replace the old station, at 1020 Hinson St. near West Charleston Boulevard. Originally built in 1957, Fire Station 5 has stood on the same location about 45 years.

The new 10,738-square-foot, three-bay station resembles the others recently opened and cost $2.9 million.

Firefighters and paramedics have been using office space provided by the Elks Lodge next door during construction, helping ensure emergency coverage for the area.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue is attempting to have the city's first fire engine on display during the groundbreaking. The truck is planned to be permanently housed at the new station upon completion.

Program on menopause planned

A free program on menopause will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Green Valley Senior Friends, 2809 N. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson.

Diana Morneault, breast care coordinator at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, will talk about the peri-menopausal years, associated changes and treatment options for the symptoms.

An overview of recent hormone replacement therapy findings also will be discussed.

Red Rock to host Harvest Festival

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area will hold its ninth annual Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Visitors Center.

There will be crafts for everyone, natural history demonstration on mammals and reptiles of the area with live creatures and talks on wildland fire safety and search and rescue.

Admission is $5 per vehicle.

Arts Advocates will hold benefit

The Nevada Arts Advocates will hold its fourth annual Arts Gala and Silent Auction at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Mirage.

Proceeds from the event are directed to the NAA Scholarship Fund that benefits graduating high school seniors in Nevada who wish to further their studies in the arts.

Merchandise Mania set this weekend

The Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas will host a Merchandise Mania sale on Friday through Sunday at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell Road.

More than 25 truckloads of merchandise, which were donated from exhibitors at a national hardware trade show held in Las Vegas last week, have been packed and moved from the Convention Center to the Boys & Girls Club, where the sale is set to take place.

Merchandise Mania will feature items such as patio furniture, lawn and garden items, hand tools, housewares, automotive products and more.

Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 367-2582.

Senior Friends is offering a free program,

Aging and Depression, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the MountainView office, 8524 Del Webb Blvd. Dr. Uma Nair will discuss the signs and symptoms of depression and how to detect them. Call 255-5404.
