Sun’s Accent section honored in national competition

For the second consecutive year the Accent section of the Las Vegas Sun has been honored in the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards contest. The Accent section finished second nationally in the General Excellence category; it also placed second in 2002.

The Sun was honored in the Class II category for newspapers with a circulation of between 25,001 and 50,000. Placing first for the second time in three years was the Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera.

The Sun submitted Accent sections from five dates in 2002.

Other General Excellence place-winners were the Dallas Morning News, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press Democrat, East Bay Express of Emeryville, Calif., Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record, Greeley (Colo.) Tribune and Westchester (N.Y.) County Times.

The Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards contest, formerly known as the Penney Missouri awards, is 43 years old and is sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia.

It is the oldest feature writing and editing competition in American newspapering. Contest rules state that entries must exhibit "excellent writing, interesting approach and valuable subject matter."
