First Friday
First Friday, a monthly cultural open house and street festival, returns to the downtown Las Vegas Arts District from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today in the neighborhood surrounding Charleston Boulevard and Main Street. Free maps and events schedules can be obtained from whirlygiglasvegas.org or at the Funk House, 1228 S. Casino Center.
Lecture
Cartoonist Scott McCloud will host a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday at UNLV as part of the art department's Visiting Artist Program. Admission is free. 895-1575.
Family Day
Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month at a Family Day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Activities will include storytelling, folk music and a puppet show. 507-3500.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District offers the following book discussion groups at area libraries this week:

Acting workshops
The New City Theatre, 2900 Patrick Lane, is offering free acting workshops for those over the age of 18 from 1-3 p.m. every Saturday. 547-1228.
Drama workshop
A free community drama workshop will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesdays in the main showroom of the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, 4000 W. Flamingo Road. 457-0234.
Sculpture contest
Entries are being accepted for a sculpture contest held by the Pulidor Foundation/Spirit of the Nations, in preparation for its second annual Native American Arts & International Film Festival from Nov. 14-16.
