Education Department official to visit two schools

Eugene Hickok, acting deputy secretary of Education, will visit two Las Vegas charter schools Friday and take part in roundtable discussions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Hickok will visit Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy on West Lake Mead Boulevard in the morning and is slated to stop by Odyssey Charter School later in the day.

Agassi Prep, now in its third year, serves 250 students in grades three through seven from predominently minority West Las Vegas neighborhoods.

Founded in 1999, Odyssey provides distance learning course work for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Students meet weekly for laboratory assignments, discussions and field trips but complete the bulk over their assignments over the Internet.
