2-year-old girl recovers from injuries sustained in accident

Daphne Veliz, the 2-year-old girl who was run over by her parents' car earlier this month, has recovered from the accident and is back home this week.

The accident happened as the family was preparing to leave their home in the 2900 block of Webster Street, near Cheyenne Avenue and Civic Center Drive, on Sept. 16.

The mother, Erica Ramirez, had placed her 4-year-old son in the front driver's side of the 1990 Isuzu Amigo, and the girl was apparently near the right rear of the car waiting to be lifted into it, Justin Roberts, North Las Vegas Police spokesman, said.

When the boy moved to the back seat, he apparently jostled the gear shift and put the car into neutral. It rolled backward down the driveway, and the right rear tire ran over Daphne's head.

North Las Vegas police did not file charges of negligence against the parents, as the incident was considered an accident and there was no evidence of willful neglect, Roberts said.

The girl was released from University Medical Center Sunday morning.
