Auto incentives sweetened

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. today sweetened its incentive programs on new vehicles, adding extra cash on many trucks and extending interest-free financing for five years to most 2003 and 2004 cars.

GM, the world's largest automaker, already was offering heavy discounts on remaining 2003 models. The new deals on '04 cars and trucks run through Nov. 3.

GM said it will carry over most of its consumer cash and financing offers on 2003 models until Jan. 2.

The deals, which began in earnest two years ago after the Sept. 11 attacks, diminish automakers' profits. But the Big Three -- which saw their U.S. sales fall 5 percent in August -- need the incentive promotions to move cars.
