Vegas airline canceling service to Denver

Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 | 10:52 a.m.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air is ending its service from Las Vegas to Denver and shifting resources to nearby Colorado Springs and Fort Collins, Colo.

Allegiant will discontinue its four weekly flights between Las Vegas and Denver International Airport on Jan. 6.

The airline began the service in July, but officials said marginal traffic on the route and a buildup in demand on the Colorado Springs and Fort Collins routes mandated the shift.

The airline is adding a second roundtrip flight between Las Vegas and Colorado Springs on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday.

The flights -- which will start as low as $69 one way -- will begin Feb. 12.

"Many are finding our Colorado Springs service an attractive alternative to flying (Denver International), which is also the case for those finding Fort Collins a convenient new alternative," Allegiant spokesman Mark Peterson said.

Allegiant also will add a Wednesday flight between Las Vegas and Fort Collins and between Las Vegas and Des Moines, Iowa. Allegiant currently offers flights between those destinations on Thursday, Friday Sunday and Monday.

The new flights will begin Feb. 11.

The airline also offers flights between Las Vegas and Fresno, Calif., Lansing, Mich., and Wichita, Kan.

Allegiant also has unveiled its new aircraft paint schemes, which advertise the company's website, low-fare flights and vacation packages to Las Vegas.

Allegiant consolidated its Fresno operations with the company's Las Vegas headquarters earlier this year. It now has about 250 local employees.
