Sports briefs for November 28, 2003
Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 | 9:57 a.m.
Michael Vick will be in uniform for the first time this season Sunday, standing by as the Atlanta Falcons' backup quarterback at Houston.
The Pro Bowl QB, sidelined since breaking his right leg in preseason, practiced for the second straight day. During a two-hour workout, Vick rolled out on pass plays after working exclusively in the pocket Wednesday. He also stopped, started and took cuts.
Doug Johnson will start when the Falcons visit Houston but Vick will be available.
Robitaille gets 700th
Luc Robitaille earned his 700th career assist in the second period of the Los Angeles Kings' game with the Phoenix Coyotes.
Robitaille, who has 12 assists this season, became the second left wing to reach the career mark when he helped set up Michael Cammalleri's goal 1:01 into the period.
Robitaille is the NHL leader in goals by a left wing (636). John Bucyk's 813 assists and 1,369 points are the most by a left wing. Wayne Gretzky is the all-time leader with 1,963 assists.
Glasgow to test Mathis
U.S. striker Clint Mathis will try out with the Scottish power Rangers, one of several clubs interested in him since the free agent left the MetroStars.
He has been training with Leicester of the English Premier League. Mathis left the MetroStars this month, wanting to explore opportunities in Europe before deciding whether to re-sign with Major League Soccer.
He will take off a few days and then head to the Glasgow club, agent David Baldwin said.
UNLV beats Kentucky
The UNLV women's volleyball team defeated Kentucky 3-2 (27-30, 30-17, 27-30, 30-25, 15-11) Thursday night in the second match of the UNLV Thanksgiving Classic. Hawaii took Weber State in four games in the opening match.
The win improves UNLV record to 12-17 on the season. Three Rebels -- Tarin Keith, Sheila Ocasio-Clemente and Leiana Oswald -- finished with more than 20 kills. UNLV plays Weber State today at 7:30 p.m.
Gustafason misses cut
Sweden's Sophie Gustafson failed to make the cut today after shooting a 5-over-par 77 in the second round of the Casio World Open at Kaimon, Japans.
Gustafson, who became the first woman to play on the Japan Golf Tour on Thursday, had two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey on the Ibusuki Golf Club course Friday for a total of 7-over 151.
The Swede is a four-time winner on the LPGA Tour.
Japan's Katsumune Imai carded his second consecutive 65, including a hole in one on the par-3 fourth, to widen his lead to four strokes with a 36-hole total of 14-under 130. India's Jyoti Randhawa was in second place.
