On the Block: Once again, it’s time for the Sun Holiday Auction

It's b-a-a-a-c-k.

'Tis the season to be jolly, and to submit a bid on an item in the annual Sun Holiday Auction. This is the sixth year we will try to find happy homes OK, let's be honest, any home will do for the many promotional items we receive during the year but do not keep because, ethically, it just wouldn't be right.

Besides, we'd rather share this cool stuff with you, our loyal readers.

There's a stocking stuffer for anybody on your list, whether it be the sports fan ("Jim Brown, All-American" item No. 25; "Tales From the BYU Sidelines" No. 253; "NFL Fever 2004" Xbox video game, No. 263), movie buff ("Encino Man," No. 267; "Catch Me If You Can," No. 269; "The Ring," No. 207) or green thumb (HGTV garden spade, No. 184, and dozens of baseball caps and T-shirts, perfect for mowing the lawn).

If the sock you must stuff belongs to a distant relative of Dean Martin, how about two martini glasses and a jar of olives, item No. 181?

For those who like to drive fast, there are books on race car drivers Dale Earnhardt (No. 114), Jeff Gordon (No. 116), Bobby Rahal (No. 112) and Tony Stewart (No. 115).

Budding superheroes might like the Lara Craft Tomb Raider T-shirt and video (No. 133) or Robin the Boy Wonder Pajamas (No. 103), although crime fighters with a little extra baggage around their utility belts might have to pass on Robin's pjs (kids size 6).

The collector on your list might appreciate the Heroes of the World Trade Center Collector Cards (No. 12) or a Nevada State Bank Matchbox armored car (No. 166).

And let's not forget the music lovers. There's a 50 Cent CD (No. 145) and Clint Holmes and Lesley Gore's "Christmas in Las Vegas" (No. 40).

Also up for bid is a concert DVD called "Neil Hamburger Live at Phoenix Greyhound Park" (No. 220), which, I am sure, can't be as dubious as it sounds.

As they say, everything must go, although I suppose the Neil Hamburger DVD might have a long shelf life. So rattle off an e-mail or drop a 3x5 index card with your bids in the mail and send a kid to camp. As usual, all profits from the auction will be turned over to the Sun Youth Summer Camp Fund.

Instructions

Study the brief descriptions of the items listed. Make your bid by using the numbers listed, on a sheet of paper or a 3x5 index card (preferred). You can bid on as many items as you like, but each bid must be listed on a separate piece of paper or index card. No exceptions.

Mail or drop-off bids

Las Vegas Sun Christmas Auction, 2275 Corporate Circle Drive, Suite 300, Henderson, NV 89074.

On each bid, list the price you are willing to pay for the item, along with name, address, and daytime and evening phone numbers. Or drop off your bid at the Las Vegas Sun office, 2275 Corporate Circle Drive in Henderson (Green Valley Parkway at the I-215 off-ramp).

E-mail rules

You can also bid by visiting the Sun website (www.lasvegassun.com) and clicking on the Sun holiday charity auction link. Again, send a separate e-mail for each item you want to bid on. Please list the item by number and include a short description. Items must be picked up in person, so if you e-mail from Pocatello, Idaho, and aren't planning on spending the holidays in Las Vegas, save the bandwidth.

Deadlines

The deadline for bidding on merchandise is Wednesday, Dec. 17. Merchandise can be picked up during business hours (9 a.m.to 5 p.m.) at the Sun building beginning Thursday, Dec. 18. Winning bidders will be notified by telephone (mail or drop-off bids) or by e-mail. All sales are final.

Please do not call the Sun to inquire about merchandise.

Note: In the event of duplicate items, merchandise will be awarded to the coinciding number of top bidders. For instance, if there are two items, the top two bidders will receive them.
