Firefighters collecting bikes for children

The Las Vegas firefighters third annual Adopt A Bike program will be held through Dec. 19 to benefit children for the holidays.

Firefighters will once again be accepting gently used or new bikes. The bikes are cleaned and repaired for distribution to Las Vegas children whose families may not be able to afford bicycles for the holidays.

Bikes can be dropped off at these locations: Fire Station 1, 500 N. Casino Center Blvd.; Fire Station 7, 10101 Banbury Cross Drive; Fire Station 42, 7331 W. Cheyenne Ave.

Many of the bikes will be given away at the annual Angel Tree event Dec. 20.

Fund-raiser set for fire captain

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue personnel have set up a fund-raiser event that will benefit one of their own, Capt. Thelonious "Theo" T. Adams, a 13-year veteran of the department who was seriously injured in a fire truck accident on Halloween.

A command post was established in the parking lot of University Medical Center, 1800 W. Charleston Blvd., to take care of any of the captain's needs and to monitor the number of visitors to see him.

For a donation of at least $10, you will be given an ornament to decorate and place on the Christmas tree that will be given to the captain's family on Christmas Eve. You can put a personal message or prayer on the bulb. Different color bulbs along with decorating material are available in the lobby of fire headquarters.

For those who are unable to stop by, there is an account set up at all Washington Mutual Banks, in the name of Theo Adams, account No. 3802028361.

For more information on either event, call 383-2888.

Courage Unlimited brings hope to patients

Courage Unlimited, a nonprofit health organization, will be distributing over 100 baskets to cancer and AIDS patients at local hospitals in early December as a symbol of hope for a cure.

The program, Gift of Hope, promotes AIDS and cancer awareness and shows support to survivors throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Courage Unlimited's goal this year is to deliver a minimum of 100 baskets to Sunrise Hospital's adult and pediatric units, University Medical Center's HIV unit, a group of local seniors and Golden Rainbow.

Volunteers are needed to put baskets together and deliver them. Call Sandra Jackson at 453-3855.
