Holiday call for blood goes out

To meet the demand for blood in the Las Vegas Valley, northern Arizona and parts of Southern California, United Blood Services says all five of its Southern Nevada centers will be open Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The blood centers also will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Potential donors can call 233-9620 for appointments and directions to the nearest blood collection center.

Journalists discuss 'Politics and Press'

A panel of nationally known journalists will gather at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to discuss "Reading Between the Headlines: Politics and the Press".

Part of the Barrick Lecture series, the event will feature Jim Angle, senior White House correspondent for Fox; Campbell Brown, co-anchor of the weekend edition of the "Today" show; and Don Gonyea, White House correspondent for "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" will serve as moderator.

The event is free, but tickets are required.

ROTC to collect SafeNest donations

Clark High School's Navy ROTC unit will hold a donation drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Fountain Shopping Center at Jones Boulevard and Sahara Avenue.

The ROTC unit will be on hand to receive donations of used clothing and small household items. All donations help to support SafeNest, a local domestic violence shelter that works with victims, perpetrators and children to help end the cycle of violence in our community.

Biddy Basketball registration starts

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas is now accepting registrations for Biddy Basketball for boys and girls in grades 2-5.

Registration is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys and Girls Club, 2980 Robindale Road and from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell Road.

At both location, those registering prior to Dec. 12 will qualify for a reduced rate.

Cost is $100, which includes membership in the club, 10 regular season games, post season tournament, personal team t-shirt and shorts, and team picture.

Practice begins Dec. 22 and games begin Jan. 20.

Volunteers from Kiwanis

and Key Clubs will lay out more than one mile of red carpeting from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Galleria Mall in the hopes of having it covered with quarters to benefit the Foundation for Positively Kids, an organization dedicated to providing comprehensive care for Nevada's medically fragile and terminally ill children. will discuss the Nevada Campaign to Repeal the Patriot Act from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Call 591-7211.
