Union protests Medicare measure

Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 | 9:25 a.m.

More than 100 members of the Service Employees International Local 1107 planned to rally at Spring Valley Hospital this morning during President Bush's speech.

The union said it was unhappy with the Medicare bill passed by the Senate today, and says Bush does not have a plan to make health care affordable.

Union spokeswoman Ty Weinert said Spring Valley Hospital is a bad place for a presidential visit because its parent company, Universal Health Services Inc., "has the worst record in Las Vegas when it comes to serving the uninsured."

Weinert said the rally has nothing to do with the fact that the SEIU does not represent any of Spring Valley's employees. She said it represents nurses and other health professionals at Spring Valley's sister hospitals, Desert Springs and Valley. The union also represents nurses at Sunrise Hospital and University Medical Center.

SEIU Local 1107 represents about 4,000 nurses in the valley and 12,000 total employees in the Las Vegas area.
