Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 | 9:43 a.m.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Some Gulf Coast casinos have given $100,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi's new economic development center.

MGM MIRAGE's Beau Rivage Resort and Casino and Park Place Entertainment Corp.'s Grand Casinos have donated the money to the USM Foundation's permanent endowment for the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship.

The new center will house the university's academic and professional economic development programs. The university is trying to raise $8 million for the center's construction and endowment.

"The center will be very important to the future growth of our state," Grand Casino Biloxi President Duncan McKenzie said in a statement. "This is a very exciting opportunity and I am proud of the casino industry and its vendors for taking a leadership roll in the fund-raising effort."
