Gephardt delays trip to Las Vegas

Democratic presidential candidate Dick Gephardt today canceled his visit to Las Vegas that was scheduled for this afternoon. The Las Vegas trip has been rescheduled for Dec. 1, his campaign said.

Gephardt of Missouri, the former House minority leader, cited his House duties as the reason for not attending a fund-raising luncheon scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at a place that was not disclosed to the general public and a news conference at 2:45 p.m. at McCarran International Airport.

"Unfortunately I have to cancel my scheduled trip to Nevada ... to vote on the Medicare prescription drug proposal currently being considered in the House of Representatives," Gephardt said in a statement from his campaign.

Memorial scheduled for nightclub host

A memorial service will be held Monday for a nightclub host killed Wednesday morning in a crash near the airport tunnel.

Justin Glen Fralick, 28, was driving a black Ford Expedition from the airport tunnel to Interstate 215 when he lost control on the onramp curve. His vehicle rolled and he was thrown from the car, the Nevada Highway Patrol said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Fralick was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fralick was a VIP host at the MGM Grand nightclub Tabu, which opened earlier this year. Before that, Fralick worked at Light at the Bellagio.

The memorial service is tentatively planned for 1 p.m. Monday, but the location has not been decided. Call 891-7619 for more information.

Dogs attack fire inspector

As many as five dogs attacked a fire inspector during a visit to a Las Vegas business Thursday morning, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

The inspector was making a follow-up to a pallet refurbishing business on Western Avenue near Wall Street at 11 a.m. Thursday when the incident occurred, said public information officer Tim Szymanski.

The name of the business was not released.

The inspector was walking to the rear of the property when a German shepherd came from behind and bit him on the leg. Another dog jumped on the inspector's back and then several more dogs attacked him.

The inspector was bleeding from the leg and went to a quick care center for emergency treatment. He is in good condition today, Szymanski said.

The dogs are being sought by Las Vegas Animal Control to see if they have been vaccinated against rabies.

The inspector, whose name was not released, is one of 22 in the department. Their mission is to make sure buildings and properties are compliant with fire and safety codes.

Driver of car that killed teen sought

Metro Police are looking for the driver of a late model white Cadillac that struck and killed a pedestrian in front of the Boulevard mall about 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Witnesses said an 18-year-old Las Vegas resident was crossing Maryland Parkway in a marked crosswalk when a Cadillac going northbound in the left lane struck the pedestrian.

A 2001 Ford driven by Alejandro Navarrete, 28, traveling in the center lane behind the Cadillac ran over the pedestrian after the teen had been hit by the Cadillac, police said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Cadillac's driver stopped at first and spoke with Navarrete, who called police. But the Cadillac driver then left the scene of the accident.

Police described the Cadillac as a newer model with tinted windows. The driver is described as a black man about 30 years old.

This is the 107th traffic fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.

Anyone with information regarding the Cadillac or the driver is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Detective Corey Moon at 229-3538.
