Letter: TV news ignores serious stories
Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 | 5:15 a.m.
WEEKEND EDITION Nov. 22 - 23, 2003
I am a Las Vegan who, until now, received a majority of my news from local television. I think I heard something about our president visiting the United Kingdom, but I'm not certain. I also think I heard something about a state somewhere on the East Coast allowing same-sex marriages, but I can't confirm this story, either.
Why am I in the dark on important news stories? Because my news sources have decided that following a pop icon's SUV through rush-hour traffic is much more important.
According to my watch (on Thursday night), the local television stations have been showing an aerial view of Michael Jackson's vehicle for almost two hours. And I anticipate missing out on prime-time programs because Michael Jackson's SUV will be filling up at a gas station.
Way to go, local television. You have proven to me that you have absolutely no intention of producing any reports that do not involve sensationalism.
