Casino expansion advances

RENO -- The Reno City Council has given initial approval to a request to nearly triple the size of a neighborhood casino on South Virginia Street south of Reno.

The proposed expansion of the Tamarack Junction Casino and Restaurant already has been approved by Washoe County commissioners.

It's currently in the county, but in an area that's targeted for annexation into the city.

Tamarack Junction opened two years ago with an 8,500-square foot gambling area in a 22,500-square-foot building.

It wants to expand to 61,000-square feet. Some 13,000-square feet would be for gambling. Another 10,000-square feet would house offices that currently are in three smaller buildings which would be demolished.

If the expansion clears regulatory agencies, the owners hope the expansion will be completed by next fall.
