Nevada receives mediocre grades

A new study by the Washington-based Corporation for Enterprise Development gives Nevada below-average grades for its development environment.
In Business Las Vegas, a sister newspaper to the Las Vegas Sun, reported that the study -- part of the 2003 Development Report Card for the States -- gave Nevada a D for "business vitality" and "development capacity." The state's best mark, a C grade, came in the category of "performance."
Nevada was last in the nation for industrial diversity and graded low for its high number of business closings, competitiveness of existing businesses and technology industry employment.
Local economic experts told In Business, however, that the results do not adequately weigh the state's growth and point out that business closings are offset by the number of start-up businesses and entrepreneurial activity.
