Slimmed-down COMDEX, new cdXpo to open Monday

Friday, Nov. 14, 2003 | 11:21 a.m.

A COMDEX computer trade show that promises to be smaller than those of previous years and a rival event debuting this year will open at separate Las Vegas convention centers Monday.

About 50,000 people are expected to attend COMDEX at the Las Vegas Convention Center this year, while about 7,000 people plan to attend the first-ever Computer Digital Expo (cdXpo) at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

When attendance at COMDEX was at its peak in the late 1990s, the show drew 215,000 people. Bill Gates, chairman of software giant Microsoft Corp., will be the keynote speaker for the 20th time this year and will make his presentation Sunday evening at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts.

The kickoff speaker for cdXpo, Gail Whipple, vice president of digital media for IBM Global Services, is scheduled Monday morning.

COMDEX is scheduled to run through Friday while cdXpo will conclude Thursday.
