Talk on Monday to discuss AIDS

Dr. Jay Levy of the Department of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, will discuss "The Social and Economic Threat of the AIDS Epidemic: How Does Science Face the Challenge?" at 6 p.m. Monday in the Adelson Auditorium of Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

The program was arranged by the Clark County Medical Society and is sponsored by Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

There is no admission charge. Physicians and other health care professionals, as well as interested members of the general community, are invited, and encouraged by the Clark County Medical Society to attend the informative event.

Nutrition program on tap Monday

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Health and Nutrition Team will present its food safety display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday at Von's, 1061 W. Owens Ave., to inform the community how to purchase, put away, defrost and store holiday foods

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is an outreach arm of the University that extends unbiased, research-based knowledge from the University of Nevada and other land-grant universities to local communities.

Educational programs are developed based on local needs, often in partnership with other agencies and volunteers.

Marine anniversary to be celebrated

The monthly dinner Tuesday of the Navy League will celebrate the 228th anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps and also encourage participation in the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program.

The evening will begin with no-host cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 7 p.m. at the New Frontier.

The guest speaker will be Staff Sgt. Eric Dey of the Marine Corps Reserve Center in Las Vegas.

All attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to Toys for Tots.

The Nevada Highway Patrol

will hold a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the NHP office, 2601 E. Sahara Ave. Trooper Bobby Kinzel, who was critically injured on duty, will be on hand to lend support. The drive is open to the public. Call Melissa Berry at 486-4100, Ext. 223.

Holiday crafts and Scandinavian baked

goods will be sold at a holiday bazaar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, to benefit the Vegas Viking Lodge of Sons of Norway. Call 869-5775.

Silverado High School

will host a Walk-A-Thon at 6 a.m. Saturday at the school, 1650 Silver Hawk Ave., to raise money for the 2004 National Student Council Convention, which will run from June 26-30. Anyone interested in pledging their financial support for the event can contact Marilyn Shane at 799-5790.
