Nevada Power plan for growth advances

The state Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday approved on a 3-0 vote Nevada Power Co.'s proposed resource plan, including plans to build two power plants.

The plan also authorizes the pursuit of new long-term power contracts to serve customer demand between 2004-2006 and directs the utility to negotiate a deal with the Southern Nevada Water Authority for Nevada Power to buy the Water Authority's surplus power.

Commissioners also asked the utility to consider speeding up the construction process on the first power plant, a $44 million, 80-megawatt plant. Original plans called for the plant to be completed in 2006.

The second $414 million, 520-megawatt plant is scheduled to be completed in 2007. Construction, however, must begin by Jan. 10 to prevent the expiration of its permit granted by the Clark County Department of Air Quality.
