Land sales money will go to Tahoe

WASHINGTON -- President Bush approved efforts to shift some land auction profits from Clark County to help preserve Lake Tahoe. Bush signed the Interior spending bill Monday that contained language permitting the shift.

The language by Sens. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and John Ensign, R-Nev., amends the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act of 1998 so that money gained from land auctions can be used for restoration efforts at Lake Tahoe.

The change to the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act of 1998, will set aside $300 million over the next eight years for water clarity, erosion control, fire suppression and other projects at Lake Tahoe.

The lake will get an average of $37.5 million each year over eight years.

The bill also authorizes $8 million for BLM land purchases, which includes $1 million for the California Trail Interpretive Center in Elko and $1 million for BLM land transfers in Southern Nevada, among other projects.
