Two LV children awake to find mother dead

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003 | 1:06 a.m.

Two elementary school children awoke early this morning to find their mother dead of an apparent homicide, Metro Police said.

The woman, who was in her late 20s, was found in her home in the 5900 block of Glen Eagles Lane, near Jones Boulevard and Washington Avenue. Her son and daughter discovered they could not wake her up about 3:30 a.m today, so they went to a neighbor for help and the neighbor called 911.

"The circumstances suggest that it may be a homicide, so we're treating it as such," Metro Lt. Tom Monahan said.

Monahan said no apparent cause of death has been determined yet.

"We're still knee-deep in the crime scene investigation," he said. "We're going to be here all day. It's slow and meticulous, but we're not going to rush it."

Yvonne Edwards, who previously lived next door to the house where the dead woman was found, said unless another woman in her 20s with two small children moved in within the last 10 months, it was likely the same person she has known for years.

Edwards said she couldn't believe her former neighbor was dead. "I just talked to her last week. This is too much. She's so young," Edwards said.

Edwards said the woman, known to her as Cindy, was Hispanic and had lived at that address for at least seven years and had no known enemies.

"I don't know who in the world would have killed her," Edwards said.
