Sports briefs for November 12, 2003

New Mexico shot an even-par 288 for the second consecutive day to maintain its lead in the UNLV Las Vegas Founders Womens Collegiate Showdown at Anthem Country Club in Henderson.
The Lobos, ranked sixth in the nation and the defending champions of the Las Vegas event, held a 15-stroke lead going into todays final round.
New Mexicos Katrina Leckovic moved into first place in the individual standings. Her 72 pushed her past first-round leaer, Trisha Quick of Colorado State, who shot 75. Oklahomas Lisa Meldrum had a 72 to move into second place.
The UNLV women, who were 12th after the first round, improved to sixth place with a 296. Junior Hwanhee Lee shot a 72 and was tied for eighth place. Sophomore Sunny Oh rebounded from a rocky first round to shoot 74. And Elena Kurokowa shot a 73 for the Rebels.
Durango star to sign
Durango High School point guard Tywain McTyer will sign a national letter of intent today to play next season for Florida Atlantic University, which is coached by former UNLV standout Sydney Green.
* Bishop Gorman point guard Moneka Knight will sign Thursday with Texas Christian University.
* Connecticut junior Emeka Okafor was one vote short of being a unanimous selection for the Association Press preseason All-America mens team. He was joined on sthe team by seniors Jameer Nelson (St.
Josephs) and Rickey Paulding (Missouri) and sophomore Ike Diogu (Arizona State) and Raymond Felton (North Carolina).
Hernandez honored
UNLV senior midfielder Alex Hernandez was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-player of the year, marking the first time a Rebels player has earned the honor. Hernandez, whose 11 goals included four game-winners, shared the award with Air Forces Marcus Sagastume. Hernandez also was named to the allconference first team and was joined by teammate Victor Arbelaez and Rod Dyachenko. UNLVs Brendon Bain was a second-team selection.
Call-up for Bembridge
The Las Vegas Wranglers will begin their six-game East Coast road trip Friday at Atlantic City without forward Garrett Bembridge, who was promoted by the Calgary Flames to Lowell of the American Hockey League. His roster spot was filled by the assignment of forward Eric Schneider from Utah of the AHL.
Roddick opens on top
Andy Roddick beat Carlos Moya at the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston in their opening round-robin match.
Sixth-seeded Rainer Schuettler beat No. 4 Guillermo Coria.
