Rebels sit in 12th place at Women's Shootout

Sixth-ranked and defending champion New Mexico shot an even-par 288 Monday at the par-72, 6,194-yard Anthem Country Club, and the Lobos held a five-stroke edge over No. 11 Oklahoma after the first round of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Shootout.

The host Rebels shot an 18-over par 306 and were in eighth place.

Colorado State's Tricia Quick tied the tournament record with a 68 to hold the individual lead by one stroke over New Mexico's Katrina Leckovic.

UNLV was led by junior Hwanhee Lee, who tied for 12th with a 74.

"We didn't putt very well as a team and that affected our outcome," said UNLV coach Missy Ringler. "We have to realize there are still 36 holes in the event and we'll try to use tomorrow as a moving day."

The other UNLV scores that counted in the team totals were Seema Sadekar's 75, Sunny Oh's 77 and Elena Kurokawa's 80.

Reds attend funeral

About of 30 of Dernell Stenson's former Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Fall League teammates including Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin attended his funeral in LaGrange, Ga. Stenson was found dead Wednesday in Chandler, Ariz. He was kidnapped in a robbery of his sport utility vehicle and killed while trying to escape.

Reginald Riddle, 19, and David Griffith, 20, were charged Monday with first-degree murder, robbery and kidnapping.

Four bid for Nets

Three investment groups wanting to buy the New Jersey Nets submitted revised bids, and another unexpected bidder reportedly made an offer. None of the four bids exceeded $300 million, and the high and low bids were separated by about $30 million.

Fire hits No. 82 team

FitzBradshaw withdrew its No. 82 Chevrolet from the Busch race this weekend after a fire destroyed a backup vehicle, uniforms, helmets, tools and other equipment. The fire broke out in a transporter traveling to Homestead-Miami Speedway. The primary car was saved.

Spadafora to trial

Former lightweight champion Paul Spadafora was ordered to stand trial in Pittsburgh on attempted homicide for shooting his girlfriend last month.
