Top-ranked Florida needed three extra playoff holes to defeat the UNLV men's team Sunday in the final round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Rebels, seeded 11th, had already upset three teams on their way to the final matchup with the top-seeded Gators. UNLV battled Florida to a 2-2 tied, with sophomore Andres Gonzales halving his match against Ryan Cochran.

Cochran battled back to tie his match with Gonzales on the final hole, leaving the squads all square at 2-2-1 and forcing the playoff.

Ryan Moore won his fourth match of the tournament, defeating Camilo Villegas 2 and 1 to lead the Rebels.

Travis Whisman pitched in with the other match victory, topping Matt Every 2 and 1.

Clijsters protests

Kim Clijsters is skipping the Fed Cup semifinals Nov. 19-20 in Moscow in personal protest against the International Tennis Federation's scheduling of the international team event. Clijsters will play her 102nd singles match of the season tonight against Amelie Mauresmo in the WTA championship at Los Angeles.

Shivers wins bonus

Chris Shivers won his second Professional Bull Riders World Championship, making it through four rounds of the World Finals at the Thomas & Mack Center and claiming the first-ever $1 million bonus. Jody Newberry, of Ada, Okla., took first place at the world finals, making four of his five rides. He was named PBR rookie of the year.

UNLV seeded third

Riding a two-game conference winning streak, the UNLV men's team enters the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at the No. 3 seed. The Rebels (6-11, 3-1) will play sixth-seeded Air Force (9-8-1, 2-4) at Sacramento State University beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rebels won their regular-season match with Air Force, 2-0.

Panthers fire Keenan

Mike Keenan was fired as coach of the Florida Panthers. Keenan will be replaced on an interim basis by general manager Rick Dudley.

LSU up to No. 3

Oklahoma and Southern California remained 1-2 and Louisiana State climbed to No. 3 in the latest Associated Press poll.
