UNLV falls in shootout

SALT LAKE CITY -- UNLV fell one match short of reaching the Mountain West Conference women's soccer championship game, losing a tiebreaking shootout 6-5 Thursday at top-seeded Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
UNLV, which ended its season at 9-9-3, played the 18th-ranked Utah women to a scoreless tie through two overtimes before the match was settled in a shootout.
Utah (15-2-1) will play in its first MWC championship match against BYU.
Both UNLV and Utah received the mandatory five kicks in he shootout, and each had three players score to remain tied at 3-3. The shootout then moved to have each team kick alternately until one had a one goal advantage.
The game was finally decided on the ninth penalty kick for each team, as Utah's Tracy Stratton scored and Rebels defender Tania Lee sent her shot curving just to the left of the goal.
