Rate hike hearings set

The state Public Utilities Commission on Thursday set a tentative schedule for hearings and consumer sessions on Nevada Power Co.'s request to raise its general rates by 9.6 percent.
Two weeks of hearings on the matter are scheduled to begin Feb. 3, with a decision by the commission due by March 29. Prior to the hearings, the commission has requested four consumer sessions to hear concerns from the public. Those will likely be held on Jan. 13 and Jan. 20.
The general rate increase -- which covers the cost of building transmission lines and power plants, as well as administrative costs and a return to shareholders -- would raise $142 million over two years.
