Radio-transmitting tags set for baggage

McCarran International Airport announced that the Las Vegas airport will begin using radio frequency tags on all checked luggage starting in 2004.
The tags and tracking system are being supplied under a $25 million, five-year contract. The system will help ensure that all bags pass through screening equipment, said Randy Walker, director of the Clark County Department of Aviation.
Each tag will carry an identifier that will be read while the bag is transported on conveyor belts through the appropriate screening machines and on to the correct plane. In addition to meeting security requirements, Walker said the system will reduce the incidents of lost or mishandled bags.
