County denies appeals of fired Assembly members

Clark County on Tuesday denied the appeals of two county employees and Assembly members fired by the county last month for receiving pay and benefits from both governments.
County human resources chief Ray Visconti heard the appeals from Kelvin Atkinson and Kathy McClain on Monday. It was the second step in a three-step termination process.
McClain and Atkinson, both of whom worked for the county's Parks and Community Services Department, now have five working days to take the issue to an independent arbitrator.
McClain, who has declined comment in the past, did not return calls this morning. Atkinson told the Sun that he hadn't been advised of the decision so he couldn't comment on it.
The county sent letters about the decision to the executive director of Service Employees International Union, the union that represents McClain and Atkinson. The letters, dated Tuesday, said no new information was presented to overturn the decision to terminate the pair, a decision that the county made last month.
Union officials had no immediate comment, calling it an ongoing personnel issue.
