Blood bank plans celebrity fund-raiser

United Blood Services will present its Images of Life celebrity fund-raiser blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Fashion Show, lower level, outside Starbucks.

Life-sized masks decorated by local artists and celebrities will be displayed. Also local artists will demonstrate mask painting.

Terrorism survivors to speak in Las Vegas

A group of six Israeli survivors of terrorism will be visiting the Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy at 11 a.m. Monday at 9700 Hillpointe Road to help raise awareness of the problems faced by terrorism victims.

The survivors include Yossi Apter, who lost his son, Noam, while he was working in the kitchen of his Yeshiva; Shimon Ilan, who last two of his children while leaving a Bar Mitzvah celebration due to a car bombing; Sherry Ben-Aroya, who was seriously wounded in the Park Hotel massacre during a Seder; Meir Schijveschuurder, who lost his parents and three siblings in a 2001 bombing; Edna Shkalim, a store owner, who was brutally attacked by a terrorist entering her business; and Geula Hershkovitz, who lost her husband in a January, 2001 ambush. She lost her son three months later at the same location in a similar attack.

The purpose of the visit is to make Las Vegas (and other communities in North America aware of the on-going horrific situation of the victims of terrorism in Israel, and to garner support for the victims as they continue to deal with their difficulties.

Red Rock hosts Mojave Max Project

The Mojave Max Education Project will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The project will present to home schoolers and any child interested in a special class, "Respect, Protect, and Enjoy Our Desert."

It is an educational program presented by Red Rock Canyon in which interns from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Community College of Southern Nevada and volunteers from the community are recruited, trained, and placed into the Clark County School District.

The volunteers teach a curriculum-based, interactive lesson about the threatened desert tortoise, adapting it to grade levels K-9. Call 515-5350.

The members of Outpost No. 77

will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City, to honor those who are currently serving in or attached to the 3rd Infantry Division around the world and those who have served their country in the past. Immediately following the ceremony, members and guests will meet for a brunch-lunch. Call 454-1754.
