Columnist Muriel Stevens: Fashion Show puts on a show

Almost daily, fashion and product shows are now part of the shopping experience at Fashion Show mall. Wednesday through Saturday, seven shows are offered; Sunday there are six shows. All take place in the Fashion Show Great Hall on an 80-foot retractable runway and stage.

Shows run on the hour beginning at 1:30 p.m. and at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The last show Wednesday through Saturday is at 7:30; the last show on Sunday is at 5:30 p.m.

These small shows last 8 to 10 minutes. Among the eye-catching episodes are accessories displayed on "humannequins" -- live models in white spandex who act as if they are pages in a catalog. Take the time to appreciate the ingenuity and to view the merchandise.

Fashion Show's in-house shows takes full advantage of the many technical specialists and creative consultants who work with the center's merchants to make it all happen.

Of course, events will be taking place throughout the holiday season and beyond. At 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 Santa will arrive at the Great Hall, snow and all. Local weathermen are predicting strong flurries and plenty of ho-ho-hos. Christmas show times with Santa are 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23; and 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 24.

Fashion Show hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Much more to come ... soon.

Unicahome and Eames: Unicahome at 7540 S. Industrial Road, just south of Warm Springs Road, is a marvelous source for modern furniture, accessories and lighting. This one-of-a-kind store (for our area) has been featured in a number of publications, including the New York Times, Metropolitan Home and Time magazine.

Unicahome is a staunch supporter of general education concerning new design, use of materials, preservation of industrial design and the arts. On Nov. 14 Eames Demetrios, director of the Eames Office in Santa Monica, Calif., will appear at Unicahome to discuss the designs, philosophy and legacy of Charles and Ray Eames.

The Eameses are considered two of the most important designers of the 20th century. The American husband-and-wife team produced many furniture designs through the Herman Miller company. Examples of their designs will be on display at Unicahome, and a film will be featured during one of two lectures at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Book signings of "An Eames Primer" by Demetrios will follow both lectures. A reception will follow the late lecture. For more information, call Unicahome at 616-9280.

Unicahome also features china, stainless steel flatware, gift items and accessories. An ideal place to shop for well-designed gifts and accessories.

Red Envelope exclusives: Red Envelope mail-order catalog has a number of items that are theirs alone. I've shopped this catalog and am impressed with the service and follow-up. Among the items exclusive to Red Envelope are a luxurious cashmere reading pillow ($98) with a baffled compartment for "superior" support (the cashmere cover zips off to be cleaned) and a three-tiered stacking tray jewelry box similar to those jewelers use ($65). Call (877) 733-3683 for a catalog.
