Editorial: Coming up on 100
Monday, Nov. 3, 2003 | 8:50 a.m.
We are looking forward to the year 2005, when the city of Las Vegas celebrates its centennial. From little more than a dusty whistle stop in 1905, Las Vegas has grown into one of the most recognizable cities in the world. Congratulations are in order -- and on a grand scale.
The city recently signed a contract with Clear Channel, a company specializing in spectacular live events. The company will line up corporate sponsorships and help plan the festivities. We agree with Mayor Oscar Goodman and the City Council that the celebration should be on a scale large enough to attract the world's attention. It will be a good opportunity to draw millions of more people to Las Vegas -- and to make up for our lackluster party at the change of the millennium.
With the public and private money that is being invested, we hope there will be a range of activities. Visitors should see the cultural and historical side of Las Vegas, as well as the traditional party scene. We're confident the celebration will reflect well on all of us who are here, as well as on those who helped make the city what it is today.
