Letter: Administration lied to get into unjustified war
Friday, May 30, 2003 | 5:29 a.m.
If I understand the latest news story correctly, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz all but says that President Bush misled Congress about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to get the legislators to vote Bush war powers. The real reason we went to war, Wolfowitz says, was because we had to get our troops out of Saudi Arabia.
Wolfowitz argues we needed the troops to protect against Saddam (who was no threat). The problem was that the Muslim extremists got upset with us for having our military in the country. Seems to me that the extremists might just be unhappy about an unjustified war of occupation of an Arab land, too. Note: we are not doing away with our Saudi base -- just taking out "most" of the troops.
I guess you can lie to Congress to start a war of occupation and get away with it. It's a good thing for the Bushies that no one lied about sex.
