Jury pay among bills OK’d by Guinn

CARSON CITY -- Gov. Kenny Guinn signed 41 bills into law Wednesday, including one increasing the pay of jury member.

Senate Bill 73 raises the fees paid jurors to $40, up from the present $15 a day, and $30 after five days sitting as a juror. It is effective Oct. 1.

The bill also eliminates the exemption from jury service for such people as railroad workers, prison guards, physicians, and federal and state officers.

The governor signed Senate Bill 289 that increases the surcharge for a taxicab ride in Clark County from 15 to 20 cents. It also raises the application fee for a taxicab driver to obtain a permit from $20 to $40. The renewal fee goes from $5 to $10. The law is effective July 1.

Also approved was Senate Bill 327 to allow the reuse of certain prescription drugs. The bill involves prisons, nursing homes and mental health centers.

If a prescription drug is returned to the dispensing pharmacy unopened and still sealed, the druggist may re-issue the drug to the same place. But he can only do it once with a prescription drug. The law becomes effective July 1.
