UNLV's Chong named academic all-district
UNLV women's tennis star Tracie Chong has been named second team Verizon Academic All-District as selected by the nation's sports information directors.
Chong, who led the Lady Rebels in victories with a singles record of 26-10 during her sophomore season, was a first team All-Mountain West Conference selection on the court. Her 3.89 cumulative grade point average in computer engineering helped her become a rare sophomore selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A native of Honolulu, Chong was named UNLV's 2003 Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year at ceremonies last month. A two-time MWC player of the week, she helped her team (16-6 overall) win its first regular-season conference championship and earn a second consecutive bid to the NCAA championships.
4 Rebels to compete in West regionals
Four Rebels will compete in this weekend's 2003 NCAA Track & Field West regionals Friday and Saturday at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif.
Sophomore sprinter Halima DeCree ranks third among all declared competitors in the women's West Region with a qualifying time of 11.52 seconds in the 100 meters. Fellow sophomore Miesha McClendon a 100-meter hurdles specialist, also qualified for regionals with a time of 14.08.
Seniors Casey Lektorich (javelin) and Tianika Sharrieff (high jump) round out UNLV's postseason representatives at the regional meet.
