Bill targets Simon takeover

LANSING, Mich. -- The takeover battle for A. Alfred Taubman's shopping mall empire took another twist Tuesday when a bill was introduced in the Michigan Legislature that, if signed into law, would effectively void a recent federal court decision and allow the Taubman family to block a hostile offer.
The measure, proposed by Rep. Bill Huizenga, a Republican from Zeeland, would help the Taubman family thwart a $1.74 billion hostile takeover of Taubman Centers by Simon Property Group, the nation's largest mall owner, and Westfield America.
Simon owns the Forum Shops at Caesars on the Las Vegas Strip and is co-developing a downtown Las Vegas outlet mall.
