Young authors
Second grade students will host the third annual "Young Author's Day" from 9:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at Edna F. Hinman Elementary School, 450 Merlayne Drive. Students will read excerpts from their books. 799-8990.
Festival
The Cultural Corridor Coalition, a group of seven cultural organizations, will hold a neighborhood festival and open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the cultural corridor, located along Las Vegas Boulevard between Bonanza Road and Washington Avenue. 229-5431.
Movie series
The Clark County Parks and Community Services Department presents the "Starlight Movie Series," which continues at 8:30 p.m. today at Duck Creek Park at the intersection of Maryland Parkway and Pebble Road. Bring picnic baskets and blankets. No pets or alcohol allowed. Call 455-8278 for upcoming titles.
Soap making
Spring Mountain Ranch State Park sponsors a talk and demonstration on soap-making from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the historic sandstone cabins. Samples will be available. 687-4384.
Spring Mountain Ranch State Park will also sponsor "Leave No Trace," a program designed to prolong the life of parks and other outdoor resources, at 2 p.m. Sunday. 687-4384.
Nature hike
Docents will lead a hike through a native ash grove at noon and 2 p.m. Monday in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. 687-4384.
Asian CineFest
The Asian CineVision's touring festival from the 25th Asian American International Film Festival will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave. The event is free. 507-4010.
Film festival
A Japanese animation festival will be held at the following two libraries this week:
Today -- 11 a.m. in Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave. 507-4010.
Sunday -- 2 p.m. in West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. 507-3940.
The festival is free, and is aimed at adults and teens.
Martial arts
Students of various ages and experience levels will demonstrate various styles of martial arts at 7 p.m. today at the Rainbow Library Ampitheater, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive. 507-3710.

Art competition
The Clark County Parks and Community Services' Cultural Division is now accepting samples of work for the fifth annual E. Pluribus Artis invitational exhibit, to be held from June 23 to Aug. 9 in the rotunda of the Clark County Government Center. Slides, photographs or digital prints and an art resume need to be received by 4:30 p.m. June 6. Send all materials to: Diane Bush, Clark County Parks and Community Services, 2601 E. Writing contest
Scripts are being accepted for the 16th Annual Nevada Film Office Screenplay Competition until June 30. Prizes include cash awards, a press conference/luncheon with the lieutenant governor of the state, gifts and promotion of the top three winning scripts to producers and production companies in Hollywood.
