UNLV investigating equipment room theft

UNLV campus police are investigating a May 11 robbery in the equipment room at the Lied Athletic Complex during which about $2,000 worth of equipment was stolen.
"All we know is there was a break-in and it is under police investigation," UNLV senior associate athletic director Jerry Koloskie said. "No suspects are in custody. They're taking an inventory to determine exactly what and how much was stolen."
A cordless phone and basketball shorts were among the items stolen. A suspect was seen running from the area by members of the UNLV baseball team which had just returned home from a series at New Mexico but could not be positively identified.
The incident is just the latest in a string of burglaries and break-ins in the area. Campus police have recently stepped up patrols and distributed flyers around the Lied Athletic Complex following a rash of auto break-ins in a nearby parking lot that has included the cars of some coaches and athletes.
"It's been a problem over there, not just in the Lied facility," Koloskie said. "It's something we've been dealing with the past year or so. Campus police have been very cooperative with us. It's such a big place and there's a lot of people around there going in and out."
Video surveillance equipment was installed in many parts of the Lied Athletic Complex several years ago after some laptop computers were stolen from offices, but none have been installed in the equipment room.
