Sports figures eye gaming firm

PHILADELPHIA -- Ed Snider, the chairman of the company that owns the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers, said he is investing in a company that hopes to build a harness racetrack and casino in South Philadelphia.

Also, Lew Katz, the owner of the New Jersey Nets, said he would not personally invest in the company, but the charitable foundation he works with might do so.

The company, Philadelphia Trotters & Pacers, is a partnership set up this year by influential Philadelphia attorney Manuel Stamatakis. The company hopes to build a track at the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

Stamatakis hopes the two sports businessmen, who are both major political contributors to Gov. Ed Rendell, invest a combined $400,000 for his project.

Katz would be involved in the selection of a "gaming operator" for the proposed slot machine business.
