Las Vegas officials to receive pay raises

Three Las Vegas officials got salary increases on Wednesday, despite the city's tight finances.

City Manager Doug Selby, who currently makes $148,863, received a 4 percent merit increase and a 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase, bringing his salary up to $157,140.

Selby, a former deputy city manager, was promoted to the top job in August, for which he received a $26,856 raise.

City Attorney Brad Jerbic, whose current salary is $135,055, received a one-time bonus of $5,402 in addition to a cost-of-living increase that raised his salary to $137,081.

City Auditor Radford Snelding, who makes $100,318, received a 4 percent merit increase and a 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase, bringing his total salary to $105,896.

The increases become effective July 1.

Mayor Oscar Goodman said in considering increases during a closed meeting session the council considered the tough budget hearing they went through on Tuesday.

"We were very conservative with our budget and in asking the folks we were interviewing how they felt about it," Goodman said. "Councilman (Larry) Brown said, 'Let's look at the flip side. When times are tough, maybe that's when you reward people.' "

Brown further explained his statement saying that he looked at Selby as the chief executive officer of the city and was impressed.

"When someone has put forth the performance that Dr. Selby has, that's when you step up and reward the person who handles the decisions on a day-to-day basis," Brown said.

Last year Jerbic was given a 9.7 percent merit increase and a one-time 3 percent bonus of $3,700, raising his salary from $123,112 to $135,055. Snelding was given a 4 percent merit increase and a 4 percent bonus of $3,860, which increased his salary from $96,460 to $100,318. Jerbic also received a 3.5 percent increase in 2001.
